The Fair Trade Action Group at Hagley

The Fair Trade Action Group at Hagley was born at  the Christmas Celebration  2005, when St.Wulstan’s Fair Traders Derek and Beryl Smith were joined by our own founder members Lizzie Heather and Jill Humphries. Bewdley-based Fair Trader Elaine  Barbour, one of the most long-established and successful fair traders in the UK, then helped the group to get started. Since that time the Fair Trade operation at Hagley has grown steadily. The Fair Trade group runs a stall in school every Friday lunch hour and also at every major school occasion.

The Fair Trade group has a turnover of more than £1000 a year and for two years has been led by Lizzie Heather, Jill Humphries and Reuben Newsome. They are currently in the process of handing over the reins to a new team of Year 9 students, led by Gemma Bagnall and Alex Green.

During this academic year the Fair Trade group is committed to achieving Fair Trade Status for the school. Tonight’s event is part of that bid and also represents a major project for our work towards achieving the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.

The Fair Trade Mark

The FAIRTRADE Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal. For a product to display the FAIRTRADE Mark it must meet international Fairtrade standards. These standards are set by the international certification body Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International (FLO).

Producer organisations that supply Fairtrade products are inspected and certified by FLO. They receive a minimum price that covers the cost of sustainable production and an extra premium that is invested in social or economic development projects. The Fairtrade Foundation licenses the FAIRTRADE Mark to products in the UK which meet FLO standards.
